I can Explain the work of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (Freedmen’s Bureau).
The following three groups were all a part of the freedmen's bureau, an important organization that protected the rights of freed slaves and destitute whites in the war-ravaged south:
Bureau of RefugeesPurpose: Helped newly freed African Americans and poor whites recover after the Civil War.
Effect: Many of these people were given food, clothes, and medical care after the war. |
FreedmenPurpose: Provided facilities and jobs for freed African Americans to encourage education in post-Civil War society.
Effect: Schools for African Americans were created for the first time and former slaves had access to an education. |
Abandoned LandsPurpose: Issued abandoned and confiscated lands to newly freed slaves in the South at a fixed price.
Effect: Thousands of African Americans were able to own land for the first time. |
